Moles are common pigmented growths on the skin that can range from flesh colored, light brown to dark brown. They are a normal benign finding on most patients. What can be difficult is distinguishing a benign, healthy mole from an atypical cancerous mole. This is where your dermatologist can help distinguish what are known as the ABCDEs of melanoma (a cancerous mole). The key to melanoma treatment is early detection, if you have any moles that are changing or appear different from your other moles you should see your dermatologist for evaluation.
If your dermatologist determines that a mole is concerning, they will likely proceed with a biopsy to send off for further evaluation with a pathologist.
