Pre/Post Care
Botox pre-treatment guidelines
- Come with a clean face, please wash off makeup at home if possible
- If receiving a lip flip and you are prone to cold sores, pre-treat with a loading dose of your prescribed anti-viral.
- Aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, vitamin E, fish oil, and St. John’s Wort can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising.
- Consider limiting intake 1 week before the procedure if medically safe to do so. Tylenol does not increase the risk of bleeding and does not need to be stopped.
- Alcohol and caffeine can also increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. Avoid intake for 24 hours before the procedure.
Botox post-treatment guidelines and what to expect
- Keep your head upright. Do not lie down or bend over for four hours after the injection. This includes no exercise such as yoga, pilates, swimming, running, etc.
- Do not rub or manipulate the treated area four hours after treatment. This may lead to diffusion of the toxin to adjacent areas and cause an undesired effect.
- You do not have to express or move your muscles more than usual the day of injection. Just go about your day as usual.
- You do not need to ice the treated areas. You can cleanse, moisturize, apply sunscreen, and make-up right after the procedure.
- A tiny bruise might occur at one or more of your injection points.
- Bruising is more likely to occur if you regularly take medications that thin the blood. This will resolve over the next 2 weeks, often after just a few days. You can use over the counter arnica creams to help speed up the process.
- Botox begins working 3-7 days after injection, at which point your muscles might feel a little different as they become less responsive when you try to move them.
- Botox reaches its peak effect at 2 weeks. If you notice any inconsistencies in your results, contact the office for a touch-up.
- The effects of Botox begin to gradually diminish over 3-4 months.
- If you continue getting Botox treatments done every 3-4 months for two years or more, studies show that your muscles may require fewer injections to maintain the same result or you may notice longer duration of effect.
